FOLKLORE      GHOST STORIES      PARK CITY HISTORY

The Washington School Inn has its fair share of ghosts! Like many of the former WSI students, our ghosts are more mischievous -- and sometimes helpful -- than they are mean or revengeful. Here are a few ghost stories told by our guests.

One night a woman was asleep in Room 330 -- one or our most beautifully appointed suites with a gorgeous antique bed and lots of decorative pillows. She was having a rather uncomfortable sleep -- tossing and turning quite a bit. She carried on this way for quite a while until she was awakened by the sound of someone writing on a chalk board! Opening her eyes she reports seeing a small figure standing next to the closet door -- no chalkboard was visible. She rubbed her eyes thinking she must surely be dreaming! Slowly, the figure of a young boy dressed in period became clear. He pointed quite vigorously at the closet door -- then suddenly disappeared. Nervous at the prospect of what she might find there, the woman decided to brave opening the closet door -- slooooowly, ever so sloooooowly. Peering into the darkness she was completely astounded at what she saw! Why, there in the closet were all of the bed pillows! She had been sleeping on the not-so-comfortable- but-beautiful decorative pillows rather than the fluffy down pillows made for sleeping! The boy-ghost saved the day and the woman fell fast asleep for the remainder of the night.

Room 310, another of our most beautifully decorated suites, has a male ghost. A young couple on their honeymoon enjoyed a lovely fire that evening. They retired leaving a small flickering flame, just enough to romantically light the room. After several hours of sleep the woman was suddenly awakened by a chaotic dancing flame quite a bit larger than the one they left burning. And there, before her very eyes, sitting in the chair next to a now roaring fire was a man dressed in attire of the 1930's. Slowly he turned his head. Their eyes locked! Then slowly, the man stood up and disappeared into thin air!

A British guest recalls awakening from a sound sleep and seeing a teacher dressed in period floating down a set of stairs in his lower level guestroom (no such stairs exist or ever did exist as far as we know). He thinks he saw a yardstick in her hand -- perhaps the one used in the morning marching ritual? As she reached the last step she turned to look at him. A faint smile came over her face and she completely disappeared into the floor! Our guest swears it was Ms. Evans for whom we have named the room.
